Help! My Design Wall Needs Help!

My design wall needs some input. It is crying Help! to all you quilters.

This has been my leader and ender project for awhile. Most things look good with a little black so I took fabric and made black 4 patches. Later I realized that I would have been better with scrappy 4 patches, but they were there so I tried to make something nice. I like the overall look of the project...BUT...I just placed the turquoise in to fill in the white to get an idea what the overall pattern will look like. It does not go with the rest of the colors. Now the hard part...what will go with the rest of the colors. I was thinking that the other strips of color surrounding the 4 patch squares would be darker than the brownish/tan that I have up there. I was thinking of another red but think that will look to strip like with the other reds in the quilt.

I need some serious help!

  1. I like how the tans make a secondary pinwheel-like design around the 4-turned-8-patches...wondering if maybe more tan (instead of blue) would work? I'm squinting hard...but I think the blue almost overwhelms the pattern and wonder if a red or other darker color would do the same?

  2. Hmmmm...what about a darker tan- like the lighter tan was then blending into a darker tan. I really like your pattern! :) Christine

  3. I like your pattern, to me maybe some more different color of tan. Good LUCK! HAPPY QUILTING!

  4. I keep thinking about a deeper shade of brown. I don't think I have anything in my stash. I just know that the 2 shades of turquoise are just to fill in to see the pattern as I decide what to replace them with.

  5. Color is not always one of my better things, but I've sat back and studied that layout for several minutes. All of the colors except the turquoise are somewhat muted or grayed down. I think if you could lay in more turquoise (either the lighter or the darker) in the appropriate white places (the other half of those pinwheels) all the way out to the edge, you would see that bright line of turquoise bring a certain charm to your scrap quilt. Isn't contrast what makes a quilt, or a painting, pop? I think I could live with it. But hey, it's your quilt! ---"Love"

  6. Actually, I agree with Love and like the turquoise. It really makes the quilt pop. However, if you really do not like it, what about a green? Something sagey or minty. Liri

  7. I agree with love also. The eye lands on the turquise first, but then moves to the tan. These colors combinations are pretty prominent here in the southwest. I think the reason you feel that the blue isn't working is because you haven't gotten it all up there.
I like it with the colors you are using here;)
    Happy Quilting!!

  8. This is a classic question for Alice (bcquilter). The turquoise just isn't the right tone. Have you something you can replace it with? I'd be tempted to stick with tan and black pinwheels. I'm sure you will work out a solution that pleases your eye. Ann :-)
